2,975 is Latest Death Count of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

  • According to Puerto Rico officials, the death toll due to Hurricane Maria is 2,975. The new figure is approximately 50 times the number of previously disclosed casualties. The authorities were facing criticism for about a year for not revealing the real death count of the most powerful storm that hit the region in 90 years. The horrendous storm struck the Caribbean island in September 2017. The US island territory since then is struggling for stability, being unable to repair its power grid and infrastructure. It has even asked help of $139bn as recovery funds from the US Congress.
