16 Dead in Gaza, UN Fears Deteriorating Situation in Coming Days

  • At the Gaza-Israeli border, Palestine officials say 16 people are dead with over hundred wounded as Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on the protesters. Thousands of Palestinians are camping along the border as part of their 6-week protest, regarded as the Great March of Return. Reports say 5 camps have been set up by the Palestinians near the border with the demand to allow refugees return to their homes, now occupied by Israel. Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has urged UN Security Council for protecting Palestinian people. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they fired at the main instigators who ignored their organizers’ call and started rioting along the border by hurling petrol bombs and stones at the fence. UN secretary general, António Guterres, called for an independent investigation and urged both sides to show restraint.
