1,500 migrants rescued by Italian coastguard and navy
April 6 , 2015
The Italian coastguard and navy have rescued around 1,500 migrants trying to reach Italy in boats, media reports said. While the coastguard sent four vessels, one vessel was dispatched by the navy to rescue the migrants after receiving distress calls.
The rescued migrants have been taken to Lampedusa island and Sicily’s Augusta and Porto Empedocle ports, Italian authorities said. In 2014, nearly 3,500 people died while trying to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, according to the UNHCR.
