13 Venezuelan prisoners die of drug overdose

  • At least 13 prison inmates in Venezuela died of drug overdose after they stormed a jail infirmary as part of a protest to demand an improvement in living conditions, the government has reportedly said.

But other reports indicate that the toll could be higher. Around 145 prisoners were taken ill.

The unrest started after a group of prisoners at David Viloria jail started a hunger strike, seeking the ouster of the new warden.

Activists have questioned official claims that the deaths occurred because the prisoners consumed drugs.
