13 charged in Bangladesh factory fire
December 23 , 2013
Owners of a garment factory in Bangladesh along with 11 managers, security guards and engineers, have been charged with culpable homicide for their negligence, leading to the deaths of 112 workers in a factory fire last year.
Several recent disasters in the nation, one of which killed over 1,100 workers, proved that the working conditions for the 4M workers in Bangladesh are harsh and unsafe. According to the public prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul, these 13 people could face life imprisonment if proven that they failed to ensure safety at the Tazreen Fashions factory.
Reports suggest that the factory, which produced clothing for brands such as Walmart, didn't have any emergency exits.
A court is expected to make a decision regarding the trial on Dec. 31.
