Australia asylum: Manus center detainees to be repatriated
January 28 , 2015
The prime minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill has said that most asylum-seekers at a detention center run by Australia were economic migrants and not refugees, and would be repatriated soon, according to media reports.
However, some activists have refuted his claims, saying the asylum claims of most of the Manus Island center detainees had not yet been processed.
Many detainees undertook a mass hunger strike earlier this month in protest against Australia’s policies towards asylum-seekers.
