YouTube launches pay-to-watch channels

  • YouTube launched a trial subscription service for channels on Thursday.

Under the pilot scheme, owners of popular channels will be able to charge fees starting at $0.99 a month for content.

So far, 53 channels are taking part, including Sesame Street, National Geographic Kids, UFC and the Laugh Factory. Each will offer a free 14-day trial.

According to YouTube, which is owned by Google, the launch comes in a bid to enable "content creators to earn revenue for their creativity".
