Yahoo reveals U.S. data requests in wake of Prism leaks
June 19 , 2013
Yahoo revealed on Tuesday that US law enforcement agencies had made between 12,000 and 13,000 requests for data in the last six months.
The requests were made between December 1, 2012 and May 31 this year, according to Yahoo.
"The most common of these requests concerned fraud, homicides, kidnappings, and other criminal investigations," Yahoo said in a statement on its Tumblr page.
Following last week’s exposé by The Guardian and Washington Post of the existence of Prism, a program that gives the National Security Agency access to user data, tech firms have come under immense pressure to disclose information on demands for information.
Apple, Microsoft and Facebook have also divulged the number of data requests they received from US authorities.
