Uber to hire 1 million female drivers by 2020

  • The online taxi-hailing company, Uber has pledged to sign up a million female drivers around the world by 2020.

Assaults by Uber drivers on female passengers have got the firm some bad publicity in the recent past.

In the US, around 14% of its drivers are women, the firm said. A company executive indicated that women may find the work attractive as it did not require minimum hours or a schedule.

Safety in app-based cabs became a prominent talking point after the alleged rape of a female passenger in India’s capital Delhi in December.
