U.S. Postal Service bans international shipments of laptops and smartphones
May 13 , 2012
The U.S. Postal Service is banning international shipments of electronic products with lithium batteries such as smartphones, laptops and iPads due to the risk of fire.
Consumers will no longer be able to make the shipments from Wednesday, including to army and diplomatic post offices.
Private companies such as UPS and FedEx will continue to make the shipments.
Since 2006, lithium batteries are believed to have caused at least two fires on cargo planes.
