Twitter is the new gang territory
October 1 , 2013
An increasing number of criminal gangs and other such groups have begun to boast about their activities on Twitter. According to a recent study, 20 percent of gang members revealed their outfits had websites online and 50 percent of them said their group posted videos.
A professor at the University of Michigan said, "if we think about violence as a disease, one particular host of that disease is social media."
Gangs are now using social media websites to pick fights with rivals instead of doing the same in person. One member said they once announced a gang fight on Facebook. Moreover, drug dealers send out coded messages in order to convey where they are selling.
The good news is that cops are using social media to catch such criminals and it is working. A group was busted only last year in New York City after the criminals bragged about their activities on Twitter.
