Sony announces plans for PlayStation 4

  • Sony announced on Thursday it is to launch its next-generation PlayStation this year.

The PlayStation 4 will be its first video game console in seven years.

Industry analysts say the console will give the firm a much-needed head start over the next version of Microsoft's Xbox.

The PlayStation 4 will have a revamped interface, enable users to stream and play video games hosted on servers and play while downloading titles as well.

Its new controller, dubbed the DualShock 4, will feature a touchpad and a camera to sense the depth of the environment in front of it.

Sony only displayed the controller but not the console.

It said the PlayStation 4 would be available for the year-end holiday season.

Sony's announcement comes as speculation mounts that Microsoft will launch the successor to its Xbox 360 this summer.
