Solar-powered plane starts five-month global flight
March 9 , 2015
A solar-powered aircraft attempting to fly around the world in a first-of-its-kind journey took off from Abu Dhabi.
The single-seater Solar Impulse-2 will move from continent to continent over a period of five months, making several stops and crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on the way.
The plane is being manned by Swiss national Andre Borschberg; later, Bertrand Piccard, also from Switzerland, will take over. The two men will take turns piloting the plane on its epic journey.
The plane has 17,000 solar cells attached to its wings and lithium ion cells for powering night-time journeys.
