'Smallest ever': IBM makes chips with 7nm components
July 10 , 2015
Technology giant IBM says it has overcome the technical challenges that could have delayed manufacturing silicon chips consisting of the smallest components ever used. IBM can now make chips with 7 nanometer (nm) wide parts. Currently, the smallest chip parts are approximately 14nm.
The 7nm chips have so far been made in a lab. They are now expected to be manufactured on a large scale, IBM indicated. The company said it had used several “design and tooling improvements” in overcoming the technical hurdles.
