'Smallest ever': IBM makes chips with 7nm components

  • Technology giant IBM says it has overcome the technical challenges that could have delayed manufacturing silicon chips consisting of the smallest components ever used. IBM can now make chips with 7 nanometer (nm) wide parts. Currently, the smallest chip parts are approximately 14nm.

The 7nm chips have so far been made in a lab. They are now expected to be manufactured on a large scale, IBM indicated. The company said it had used several “design and tooling improvements” in overcoming the technical hurdles.
