Saudi blogger gets a 10 year prison sentence

  • A blogger got 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for creating an Internet forum in order to debate the role of religion in the Saudi Arabia.

Reuters notes that Raif Badawi was sentenced to seven years and 600 lashes last year but his sentence got harsher after a retrial. The man who co-founded a site called the "Liberal Saudi Network," has also been demanded to pay $266k in fine.

Media reports indicate that Amnesty International referred to the punishment as being outrageous and has asked the government to change it.
