Saudi Arabia threatens to ban Skype, Whatsapp
March 26 , 2013
Encrypted messaging services such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp may be blocked in Saudi Arabia, according to the country’s telecommunications regulator.
The move comes in a bid to monitor the applications, which Saudis say that would hinder their communications.
According to Saudi media reports, the companies behind the applications have been given a week to respond.
No reason was given as to why the demands were made.
Several years ago, Saudi authorities set out to curb the Blackberry messaging service.
