Russian Wikipedia shut down in protest of censor law
July 11 , 2012
The Russian version of Wikipedia was shut down for 24 hours on Tuesday in protest of a law that would enable the government to blacklist certain sites.
A black line was seen across the site's logo with a message explaining the move to visitors trying to access the site.
The government says it wants to block sites that show child pornography, promote teenage suicide and spread information about drugs.
However, Wikipedia has likened the proposed law to the Great Firewall of China.
The government is seeking to make amendments to its Act for Information, due to be reviewed in parliament later in the day.
If approved, it will allow the government to set up an agency, which would maintain a list of banned sites.
