New York state bans fracking, citing 'significant health risks'
December 18 , 2014
New York state has banned fracking, the only state in the US other than Vermont to do so.
Following a report, the state has concluded that the method used in fracking to extract gas and oil potentially posed health risks.
Citing “significant public health risks” associated with the process, the state’s health commissioner Howard Zucker said relying on the “limited data” currently available would be “negligent” on his part.
New York had started an environmental review of hydraulic fracturing in 2008, and has had a moratorium on the process since then.
