Navy to deploy its futuristic weapons
February 19 , 2014
Some of the Navy's weapons look like they have come out of a Star Wars movie. That future is now the present and the Navy plans on deploying its first laser this year. Reports suggest that it is also expected to test a rail gun prototype within the next two years.
The Navy's program manager for directed energy and electric weapons systems mentioned that it "fundamentally changes the way we fight" but it's more about the economics of such weapons rather than abut the technology.
Unlike bombs and weapons, which eventually run out, these weapons have the ability to be fired continuously. However, lasers are not effective if the atmosphere is rainy or dusty.
