LivingSocial cyber attack hits millions of customers
April 28 , 2013
A cyber attack on LivingSocial, the second-largest daily deal company, may have affected more than 50 million customers.
The company said Friday’s attack resulted in unauthorized access to customer data, including names, email addresses, date of birth and "encrypted" passwords.
LivingSocial maintained that customer credit card and merchants' financial and banking information were not accessed.
LivingSocial, part-owned by Amazon, does not disclose how many customers it has.
However, a day after the attack, a spokesperson said "a substantial portion" of the company's customer base had been affected.
LivingSocial has also contacted customers who closed accounts as it still stores their information in databases.
The attack hit customers in the United States, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Southern Europe and Latin America.
