Kuwaiti woman jailed over emir tweets
June 11 , 2013
A Kuwaiti woman was sentenced to 11 years in jail on Monday for insulting the emir on Twitter.
Huda al-Ajmi was also found guilty of misusing her mobile phone.
The 37-year-old teacher does have the right to appeal against the sentence.
In recent months, Kuwait has punished a number of Twitter users for insulting its ruler, Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah.
Last month, an appeals court overturned the five-year sentence for opposition figure Mussallam al-Barrak.
Barrack was convicted of "undermining" the emir by calling on him to avoid "autocratic" rule in Kuwait.
