June 10 , 2012
Hacking group Anonymous have staged protests across 16 Indian cities against Internet censorship in the country.
Members wearing Guy Fawkes masks were seen at demonstrations across the country, including the commercial capital Mumbai. The costumes are a trademark of the ‘hacktivist’ group.
Anonymous India organized the campaign against unfair blocking and banning of file sharing sites by Indian Internet service providers.
The group is also protesting Indian government regulations that force websites to remove objectionable posts.
The government has defended its actions in order to prevent offensive and blasphemous content from being posted. With regards to banning file-sharing sites, it maintains that court orders exist to protect filmmakers and musicians from piracy.
