September 18 , 2012
Google has purchased Instagram rival Nik Software, which makes photo-editing application Snapseed, for an undisclosed amount.
In recent months, Google and Facebook have battled it out for social network followers through mobile applications such as photo editing.
Snapseed’s editing features have enabled it to build up a loyal fan base of 9 million users despite its $4.99 price tag.
Instagram, which boasts some 100 million users, is available for free on Apple's mobile devices.
Earlier this year, Facebook bought Instagram, which allows users to add filters and effects to pictures taken on their smartphones, for $1 billion.
