European police chief warns of perils of computer encryption
March 29 , 2015
A police chief from Europe has warned that online communication that is hard to detect is the biggest challenge faced by security agencies in combating terrorism.
Europol chief Rob Wainwright said encrypted communications and hidden areas of the net – the so called ‘dark net’ – were making it harder to monitor terrorism suspects.
He said technology firms should consider the effects such encryption software has on law enforcement. Terrorists were using encrypted communications to operate, current investigations had revealed, Wainwright said.
