Etch A Sketch inventor Andre Cassagnes passes away at 86

  • The inventor of the classic toy Etch A Sketch has passed away at the age of 86.

Andre Cassagnes died in Paris on January 16, according to the Ohio Art Company, the American firm that made the toy, on Saturday.

With its red-frame, grey screen and two white dials, Etch A Sketch allows children to draw something and shake it away to start again.

Cassagnes came up with the idea in the late 1950s while working as an electrical technician.

It was picked up by the Ohio Art Company at a toy fair in 1959 and went on to sell more than 100 million copies.

The American Toy Industry Association has hailed the Etch A Sketch as one of the most memorable toys of the 20th century.
