Don't answer a call that only rings once

  • Scammers have recently been using computers to call thousands of people each hour in order to make money when they call back.

The calls are being made from outside the US but the victim won't realize that since the number appears to have a +1 code. An international call fee of $19.95 as well as another fee of $9 per minute is charged when the victim calls back.

Not many people fall for the scam but a few tend to consider an unrecognized call to be an important one. Searching for the number and area code online would be an efficient way of knowing where the call is coming from.

The Better Business Bureau is calling this the "One-Ring Phone Scam."
