Direct messages rule eased on Twitter
October 17 , 2013
Twitter users can now send direct messages to any other user on the social networking site irrespective of whether or not the other user is following them in return.
This means users can now send direct messages to their favorite celebrities if they choose to enable the new feature.
The setting that comes with a checkbox reads, "Generally, you must follow someone before they have the ability to direct message you. If you check this option, any Twitter user that follows you will be able to send you a DM, regardless of whether you decide to follow them back."
According to some people, the company might be trying to make the service friendly for advertising as it comes closer to IPO; twitter hasn't commented on this new development as of yet.
