Apple smart watch plans confirmed by U.S. patent

  • New evidence emerged on Friday in a patent filing that Apple has been working on a smart watch since at least 2011.

The document, dated back to August 2011, describes a flexible touchscreen display that would be able to communicate with a smartphone or other electronic device.

The development coincides with a report from a tech consultancy suggesting there is growing for such a gadget.

According to ABI Research, around 485 million wearable computing devices may ship by 2018, providing a lucrative growth opportunity for Apple and the industry as a whole.

Several media outlets, including Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, published reports this month saying sources had confirmed Apple was experimenting with such a concept.

The iPhone maker is yet to issue a comment.
