Apple overtakes Samsung, becomes world's biggest smartphone maker

  • It’s official: Apple has overtaken South Korean firm Samsung to become the biggest smartphone maker in the world.

In the Christmas quarter, Apple sold more phones than any other firm on the back of rising demand in China. The US technology giant sold 74.8 million smartphones in this period, ahead of the 73 million units sold by Samsung, according to Gartner, an analysis firm.

Apple’s profits in the last quarter were a record $18 billion, thanks to a spike in demand in China.
