Apple denied iPad Mini trademark in U.S.

  • Apple has been denied a trademark for its iPad Mini by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The trademark application for the tablet was rejected as the name was "merely descriptive".

Apple has until July to convince the Patent Office that the smaller model differs from the iPad.

The letter by the Patent Office was issued in January but has only just been made public.

According to the letter, the "applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant's goods".

The terms "mini" and "pad" and the prefix "i-" were all descriptive, it added.

Neither as individual terms nor as a composite result did iPad Mini "create a unique, incongruous, or non-descriptive meaning in relation to the goods being small handheld mobile devices comprising tablet computers capable of providing Internet access".
