Apple announces September 12 event

  • Apple has sent invitations out for an event in San Francisco on September 12. The event is widely expected to be the unveiling of the iPhone 5.

The e-invite read, "It's almost here" and included a number 12, signifying the date of the event, which cast a shadow of the number 5, hinting that the fifth version of the smartphone could be released.

Apple's iPhone launches are among the most highly anticipated events in the tech industry calendar.

The latest version of the iPhone, which generates more than half of the firm’s revenue, may sport a larger, higher-quality screen, according to sources.

Analysts say the bigger screen may come as a response to rival Samsung, whose larger Google Android phones have helped it become the world's top smartphone maker.

Speculation is also rife that Apple may reveal details about a smaller version of its iPad.

The new iPhone is expected to hit stores ahead of the holiday season.
