Amazon launches online shopping site in India
June 6 , 2013
Amazon launched its first shopping website in India on Wednesday.
The Internet retail giant made its first foray into the Indian market last February when it launched Junglee.com, which enabled customers to compare prices online but not buy items.
Amazon will initially sell books, films and television shows but plans are in the pipeline to offer mobile phones and cameras within the next few months.
India boasts more than 50 million active Internet users, out of which around 40 percent have previously made online purchases.
However, Amazon will not be allowed to sell its own products due to Indian laws that prevent multi-brand retailers from selling directly to consumers online.
India recently relaxed its policy towards multi-brand retailers but will only allow firms such as American supermarket chain Walmart and France’s Carrefour to open physical stores and sell directly to customers.
