Women's Soccer World Cup: Carli Lloyd scores hat-trick as US defeat Japan to win title

  • Carli Lloyd scored three goals within 13 minutes to take the match away from Japan as the United States overwhelmed their Asian opponents 5-2 to clinch their third Women’s World Cup soccer crown.

    Lloyd’s stunning hat-trick, including a goal from the halfway line, put the US 4-0 ahead, with Lauren Holiday scoring in the 14th minute.

    Japan never recovered from the initial shock.

    Yuki Ogimi’s 27th minute strike and an own goal helped Japan reduce the lead, but Tobin Heath struck back with a fifth.
