Williams and Federer advance to French Open quarterfinals

  • Fourth-round play at the French Open continued on Sunday in Paris with Serena Williams posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Italy's Roberta Vinci.

    Williams will next play Russian veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals.

    Kuznetsova, the 2009 French champ, beat eighth-seeded German Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to secure her place.

    In the day’s other matches, fifth-seeded Sara Errani beat Carla Suarez Navarro.

    Errani will next take on Agnieszka Radwanska who won against 2008 champ Ana Ivanovic.

    In the men’s round, Spain’s David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France eased through their respective matches.

    Fourth-seeded Ferrer defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

    The sixth-seeded Tsonga recorded a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win against Serbia's Viktor Troicki.

    Ferrer next faces Tommy Robredo while Tsonga will play Swiss maestro Roger Federer, who beat Frenchman Gilles Simon, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
