Venus Williams starts U.S. Open campaign with straight sets win

  • Venus Williams bounced back from an early deficit to record an easy win in her return to the U.S. Open.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion pulled out of the tournament before her second-round match last year due to being diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes exhaustion and joint pain.

Williams beat fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday.

After going down 0-2 in the first set, Williams, unseeded with a ranking of number 46, won 12 of the last 14 games.

She next faces sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany.
