UN cancels Gaza marathon over Hamas ban on women
March 6 , 2013
The United Nations agency behind the Gaza marathon has canceled the race due to the territory's governing Islamist Hamas movement banning women from taking part.
The marathon, which would have been the third to take place in Gaza, was scheduled for Sunday.
Hamas said the marathon could go ahead if "local traditions" were adhered to.
In a statement, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said it made "the disappointing decision" after "discussions with the authorities in Gaza who have insisted that no women should participate".
Last year, thousands of runners took part in the event, including some women.
