June 17 , 2012
European soccer body UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation following racist chanting during Thursday’s Italy game.
UEFA is investigating reports a banana was thrown on to the pitch during the Group C match.
A photographer claims he saw a steward retrieving a banana and heard monkey chants directed at Mario Balotelli.
Nearly four years ago, Croatia were fined $23,500 by the sport’s international body FIFA after England striker Emile Heskey was subjected to monkey chants in a World Cup qualifier in Zagreb.
