UEFA Europa League: Liverpool knocked out after losing penalty shootout against Besiktas

  • Liverpool were knocked out of the Europa League after losing to Besiktas in a penalty shootout on Thursday.

Tolgay Arslan’s 72nd minute goal forced the match into extra time and penalties after the two teams were tied 1-1 on aggregate.

Besiktas shrugged off an indifferent start to dominate the second half, and eventually won 5-4 on penalties.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, said Istanbul was not a “happy place for us tonight”. Slaven Bilic, the Besiktas coach, described the victory as a “great night” for his club and Turkish football.
