Tokyo to host 2020 Olympics

  • Despite the Fukushima crisis, Tokyo has been chosen to host the 2020 Olympics over the other contenders- Madrid and Istanbul.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised an effective cleanup in his presentation to the committee. "I am so happy, I am overjoyed," he said.

Tokyo had hosted the Summer Games back in 1964. Istanbul was defeated in the final round of secret voting by the International Olympic Committee and Madrid had been eliminated earlier after having a tie with Istanbul.

The Olympic plan in Tokyo is expected to cost anywhere between $5M to $6M and the city claims to already have $4.9 billion saved in order to pay for it.

The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held in Brazil and the Winter Olympics in Russia next year. The Winter Olympics will be held in South Korea in 2018.
