Tennis: Victor Estrella Burgos wins Ecuador Open

  • Victor Estrella Burgos from the Dominican Republic has become the oldest first-time winner of an ATP title by beating Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the Ecuador Open final on Monday.

    Burgos, 34, beat the world number 14 Lopez 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) in the clay-court competition.

    On Saturday, the 73rd ranked Estrella Burgos overcame Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in the semi-final.

    Describing the final as a “very tough day”, Burgos said he was nervous in the beginning of the match but “relaxed a bit in the tie-break” of the third set.
