Tatyana McFadden wins New York Wheelchair Marathon

  • Tatyana McFadden has won a Grand Slam of the world's leading four marathons in one year, by winning the wheelchair event at the New York Marathon on Sunday 4th November. She has already won the Boston, London, and Chicago wheelchair marathons this year. The 24-year old McFadden won in a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 13 seconds, which was more than 3 minutes and 40 seconds ahead of Wakako Tsuchida of Japan, who was placed second.

    McFadden was at the Boston Marathon on 15th April this year, when explosions near the finish line injured more than 260 people and killed 3 at the venue. Security was intense and blue and yellow flags of the Boston Marathon were placed along the the 26.2 mile-long route of this year's New York Marathon. "We'll always carry Boston in our hearts," McFadden said before her winning race.

    Meanwhile Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya won the men's marathon with an unofficial time of 2:08:23 and Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya won the women’s event with an unofficial time of 2:25:07.
