Spain must win Euro 2012 to lift country's spirits, says country's PM
June 2 , 2012
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said the country must win the Euro 2012 to help lift spirits over the nation's economic woes.
Rajoy’s comments come as Spain continues to struggle with a crippling recession, increasing rates of unemployment and a worsening banking crisis.
Visiting the squad at their training base outside Madrid, Rajoy said it would be “very comforting” for the nation if the world champions retained their Euro title.
Spain’s opening Group C match against Italy in Gdansk, Poland will take place on June 10.
They are vying to become the first nation to win two consecutive European titles with a World Cup in between.
