South African boxing champion Sanders killed by robbers

  • South African former world heavyweight boxing champion Cornelius "Corrie" Sanders died on Sunday after being shot by armed robbers.

    The 46-year-old was attending his nephew’s 21st birthday at a restaurant near Pretoria. He died in hospital from wounds to his arm and stomach.

    Known as "The Sniper", Sanders won the World Boxing Organization heavyweight title in 2003 against Ukraine's Wladimir Klitschko.

    Out of 46 professional fights, he lost only four.

    Police are still searching for the robbers.
