Sharapova advances to semis at Sony Open

  • Four-time runner-up Maria Sharapova secured her place in the semifinal at the $4.2 million Sony Open tennis event on Wednesday.

The second-seeded former world number one beat eighth-seeded Italian Sara Errani 7-5, 7-5 in just under two and a half hours in a rematch of last year's French Open final.

Sharapova is currently riding high on a 10-match winning streak, which includes a title at Indian Wells two weeks ago.

The Russian will meet winner of the Roberta Vinci-Jelena Jankovic match in the semifinals later today.

The other semifinal will see top-seeded and five-time champion Serena Williams take on fourth-seeded Radwanska.
