Top seed Serena Williams started this year's French Open with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Georgia's Anna Tatishvili on the red clay court at Roland Garros on Sunday.
Last year, Williams lost to France's Virginie Razzano in the first round of this tournament.
Meanwhile, Williams’ sister, Venus, lost her first round match for the first time since 2001. She was beaten 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 by 40th-ranked Urszula Radwanska of Poland.
In the day’s other match, 31-year-old American Sara Errani, the No. 5 seed, posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Arantxa Rus.
Errani was beaten by Russian superstar Maria Sharapova in last year's French Open title match.
On the men's side, former champion Roger Federer and David Ferrer won their respective first-round matches.
Federer, the 2009 French Open winner, beat Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Ferrer, last year’s semi-finalist, recorded a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over Australia's Marinko Matosevic.
