Semi-final shocker: Djokovic, Federer knocked out of US Open

  • In a day of historic upsets at the US Open men’s semi-finals, World number one Novak Djokovic was humbled by Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Roger Federer was knocked out by Croatia’s Marin Cilic.

Djokovic, the favorite to win the tournament, got bogged down by the extreme humidity and made a series of unforced errors as he went down 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to Nishikori, the first Asian male player to reach a grand slam final.

The second match was more one-sided, with Cilic overcoming Federer in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
