Seattle Mariners formally announce deal with Felix Hernandez

  • The Seattle Mariners formally announced on Tuesday that they had signed a deal with ace pitcher Felix Hernandez.

The long-term contract will reportedly make the 2010 American League Cy Young winner the richest pitcher in MLB history.

Hernandez will officially sign the agreement, worth $175 million over the next seven seasons, during a press conference later today.

The two sides had agreed to terms on the contract last Thursday but concerns had been raised over Hernandez's elbow following a physical exam.

Hernandez has two years and $39.5 million left on a five-year extension he signed with Seattle prior to the 2010 season.

The new arrangement will pay the right-hander $25 million a year through to 2019.

The 26-year-old has made 238 starts for the Mariners since debuting in 2005, going 98-76 with a 3.22 ERA.

The three-time All-Star broke into the majors as a 19-year-old with Seattle in 2005.
