Rafael Nadal wins French Open for record 7th time
June 12 , 2012
Rafael Nadal has claimed the French Open title for a record seventh time.
The Spaniard’s victory marked his third successive year of winning the title.
His seven championships at Roland Garros set an Open Era record to break a mark he shared with Bjorn Borg.
Nadal earned a 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory over world number one Novak Djokovic in a final that started Sunday but finished a day later due to persistent rain.
He also captured his 11th career Grand Slam crown, which may have been more if not for Djokovic's recent domination in the majors.
The Serb, who was trying to become the first man to hold all four major championships at the same time since Rod Laver won a natural Grand Slam in 1969, has won all of the last three Grand Slam titles at Nadal's expense.
