Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams win Madrid Open
May 13 , 2013
Rafael Nadal beat Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2 6-4 to win the Madrid Open on Sunday.
The victory brought the fifth-seeded Spaniard his 40th career clay title, matching Thomas Muster for the second-most in the Open Era.
He now joins Roger Federer as the only other three-time Madrid champ.
In the women’s final, world number one Serena Williams won the 50th title of her 18-year career after defeating Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-4 to defend her Madrid Open crown.
Williams' victory marks her fourth tournament success of 2013.
Sharapova has a poor record against Williams. She has beaten her just twice in 15 attempts, and never on clay.
