NFL makes an exception with this year's Super Bowl
June 5 , 2014
Most people with rusty Roman numeral skills wouldn't know the number of Super Bowls there have been so far. ABC News reports that the good news, however, is that the NFL is using the usual number 50 and calling it Super Bowl 50 this time.
"When we developed the Super Bowl XL logo that was the first time we looked at the letter L," the league's VP of branding said. "And, at that moment, that's when we started to wonder what will happen when we get to 50?"
Considering that 'Super Bowl L' would look "dumb" it will be the first one without Roman numbers. However, the game in 2017 will be called Super Bowl LI.
